On March 18, 2011, The Neighborhood School (PS363) in New York City, hosted a fundraising event for the victims of the Japanese earthquake and Tsunami. At the event, we filmed the students cheering for Japan, "Ganbare Nippon!", which means "Don't give up, Japan" or "Go Japan Go!".

Don’t forget your kindness. Don’t forget to lend a hand, to help others, and the heart to forgive. You are not alone. We are with you.

The vending machine, the internet wifi spot has been opened to the public; everyone is cooperating and people around the world are moved by this and are trying to help. We have changed since the time the Hanshin earthquake struck 16years ago. We have grown stronger.

United Nations quotes “Japan is one of the most generous and strongest benefactors— we will do ANYTHING and EVERYTHING we can at this very difficult time.”

On my four-hour walk home, a woman was standing out on the sidewalk holding up a sign that read “Please feel free to use our bathroom!” Japan is the most heartwarming country in the world. I just cried and cried.

My two year old son was putting his shoes on himself saying “I’m going to go arrest the Earthquake!” I realized that inside a tiny body, there is a lot of courage and Justice. Everyone, lets stand strong and get through this.

M9.0 marks it as the biggest earthquake ever. Let us mark our love and energy to reconstruct as the biggest ever.

A ninth-grader was making rounds on his bike with his dad to check if everyone was alright. Before the earthquake, he was probably a rebellious teenager just like any other boy of his age. He now saw that his father was as strong as a father could be and has developed a true respect for him. Experiences we’ve gained as adults can be the most reliable thing in times of crisis.
Fathers and mothers in areas affected by this disaster, show your strength and pass the future on to your children.

I saw a child saying to a station staff, “Thank you very much for your great job to keep driving trains.” The staff dropped his tears. My tears also dropped much.

An old man spilled out “What’s going to happen next?” A young boy, probably in high-school, sitting next to the old man replied, “It’s okay. Hang on for just a little while. When we grow up, I swear we will fix everything back together again.” The boy kept rubbing the old man’s back. A bright future, that’s what’s next!

From conversation overheard at evacuation camp

Tomorrow, my father will be sent to the Fukushima nuclear plant. He will be retiring from his job in six months, and I was near to tears when I heard that he actually volunteered to go. “What we do now will affect the future of nuclear plants. I have a mission to accomplish” he said. I wouldn’t say that he’s been a dependable father at home, but I’ve never felt this proud of him as I did today. We are all praying for his safe return.

A child is holding a snack, and waiting for his turn in queue at cash register. When it was almost his turn, he looked at the register then he looked like he was pondering for a moment. Then he put the money he had to buy a snack into a donation box and returned the snack he was going to buy, to the shelf, and left the store. Cashier said “Thank you” to his back in a quavering voice.

Disneyland gave out sweets from their shops. Some high school girls got many as they can. I thought why, but they gave the sweets for children in evacuation site. That was really moving scene.

Last night when I was tired out waiting for the train at the station, the homeless people gave me one of their cardboards to prevent the cold… even though we usually ignore them in daily life… So warm.

I recall my mother’s words,
”We don’t have enough for us when we fight over things, but we have more than enough when we are willing to share.”
I am highly proud of those of us who put this in practice having suffered from the disaster in Tohoku. I feel proud of Japan. I wish you all best of luck.

A young lady was hollering at the media staff who came to report damages at Ishinomaki. Thinking that she was calling for help, the media staff went over to where she was and met several locals evacuated from their homes handing out hot coffee.
“You guys are working hard too. Have some coffee”
They have enough things to worry about themselves.
Japanese are such wonderful people.

チャリティーコンサートでSMAPの歌を歌うアメリカの子供たち

3月27日にユタ大学（University of Utah)にて、ユタ州地元の日本人ミュージシャンと学生たちの間で日本為のチャリティーコンサートが行われました。

日本太鼓、琴、笛などの演奏のほか、アメリカ人の子供たちによってSmapの”世界に一つだけの花”を日本語で歌ってくれました。

この短い期間に日本語で歌を覚えてがんばって歌ってくれた子供たち、ありがとう！

そうして、すばらしいチャリティーコンサートを開いてくださった皆さまありがとう！

アメリカのコストコでの募金運動 Costco donation story

みんながもう知っていると思うけど、コストコでは日本の東北太平洋沖地震のために募金箱を各キャッシャーが設けているじゃない？

1週間前ほどで　＄500,000.00　ドル　集まったって　5400サウスのコストコの人は言っているらしいけど、それがその支店だけなのか？
アメリカ全土合わせて？かわからないけど、今日ね、コストコに行ったら　

キャッシャーの人が一人ひとりに　笑顔で　「日本で起きた大地震のために募金しませんか？」

ってすごい丁寧に声かけをしてくれているの。それだけでも嬉しいんだけど、私の番になって、私が「私の国のためにありがとう。うれしいです。」って言ったら、キャッシャーの人が何人か集まってきて、「貴方の家族は大丈夫？私たちはこの募金で少しでも沢山の日本人がすくわれることを願っているのよ！」って言ってくれて、うれしかったー。

キャッシャーの人たちは誰も日本に知り合いもいなければ、知らない国、離れた国で起きた地震なのに、まるで自分の大切な家族がいるように一人ひとりに丁寧に声かけをしてくれていたキャッシャーの人がとっても印象的だったよ。

Costco put a donation box in the register area in its South Salt Lake City store on 5400 South. The cashier told me that this has been very successful and may have raised around $500,000 nationwide up through last week. Each time a customer would check out the cashier would ask with a smile if he or she would like to donate something to help the people of Japan. As I checked out, I told them thank you for helping my country and that it was very encouraging. Several cashiers gathered around and asked me if my family was okay and told me they hoped that the small donations would help many people in Japan. This was so gratifying to me.

I was very impressed that these cashiers who had no friends in Japan and know little of the country acted as though members of their own family had been affected in a faraway place and treated me so politely.

福島の友達からのメッセージ　Message from Japanese Friend

アメリカからのあたたかい励まし、本当にありがとうございます。
地震、津波、原発。
まさに今、三重苦といわれている福島から、コメントを
書かせていただきます。
私の住む町は原発からは離れており、海岸線でもないので
実際の被害は地震によるものだけでしたが、
地震そのものは、マグニチュード９、震度6強という
今までに経験したことの無い恐ろしいものでした。
激しい揺れが2分以上続き、このまま家ごと潰れて
死んでしまうのだろうかと、覚悟をしたくらいです。

友人は宮城の仙台で２日間、津波で流されたがれきに
埋もれて過ごしました。
別の友人が教師として勤める中学校では、校舎が津波の
被害に遭い生徒と先生が命を落としました。
まさに、数時間前まではごく普通の生活をしていたはずの
人々が、1瞬のうちに生活すべてがひっくり返され、
家族を、学校を、職場を、仕事を、奪い去って行ったのです。

それでも、私たちはいつまでも打ちひしがれているわけには
行きません。

家族を全員失くした子どもが、避難所の中でボランティアとして
小さなお子さんの世話係をかって出ています。
家を流されたご老人が、生かされた命を最後まで一生懸命生きる、と涙を見せずに語っています。
泣いてばかりはいられません。
こうやって、皆さんの支えや励ましがあることで、
私たちは人と人とのつながりがどれだけ素晴らしいものか
あらためて知ることが出来ました。

遠く離れていても、会ったことが無くても、一緒に嘆き
悲しみ、そして、支えて下さっていることに
心から感謝します。

アメリカは大学時代をアメリカで過ごした私にとって
第二のふるさとです。
大好きなアメリカからの大きな支えを受けて、
これからも頑張って行きます。

まだ、日々原発の恐怖に怯えながら過ごしております。
私たちは冷静に落ち着いて物事を見極めながら
行動して行くしか出来る事がありません。
怖くて、すべてを捨てて逃げ出してしまいたくなるけれど、
それは出来ない。
震えて隠れていても明日はやって来ます。
だったら、精いっぱい生きなくてはなりません。
現況がこの先今以上に悪化することが無いよう、
ぜひぜひ貴国のお力もお貸しください。
その他世界中のお力をお貸しください。
神のお力もお貸しください。
安心出来る生活が戻った時、私たちは出来る限りの御恩返しを
するつもりです。
とにかく、今は私たちに安心して外を歩ける環境を下さい。
